Bloody Mary's Count as a Salad and Other Silly Things I Tell Myself

Hello!  And welcome to the  Bloody Mary's Count as a Salad, and Other Silly Things I Tell Myself link-up, hosted by me, and A Boy, a Girl, and the Marine Corps.

Each week, the Link Up will open up on Monday and close on Wednesday.  The general guidelines are, use the picture above in your post.  Submit your link on either this blog, A Boy, A Girl, and The Marine Corps!  Share some silly things you tell yourself.  And be sure to grab the code to include the linky tool on your blog, this allows your readers to link up via you, but still be part of the whole Shebang!  :)

I had my whole post pre-written, and ready to post for this morning, it was fun and lighthearted and silly, and then, I went to Chicago for my Mission Continues Orientation.  I came back a little smarter, motivated, and humbled which lead me to re-do my entire post. Over the weekend I met with over 100 other Veterans, just like me who were looking for the same purpose they had while in the military, we were all looking for a mission, something we could engage in, another reason to want to wake up every day. Most of the people I was with had various injuries, illnesses and wounds, they had deployed multiple times, they know pain, and loss, hurt, you could say that MOST of the people in that room could have had a very solid "Excuse," for not being there, and not stepping up to the challenge we all committed to this weekend. I had the honor of hearing and speaking to an amazing man this weekend,  LT Col Mark Weber, and he taught me a little something about excuses, they don't exist in his world. Lt Col Weber was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in which he named Beufort. The chemo has stopped working, and  LT Col Mark Weber is DYING, he is in pain EVERY day of his life, and yet, Saturday along side the 100 of us he, his wife and 3 boys gave up their weekend to help us with our service project in Chicago. It was hard, it was hot, it was not what many would call fun, there were times a lot of us wanted to give up, but seeing him push on kept us going. Lt. COL Weber gave up his time, time that he will NEVER get back. They could have been his last days, his last hours, and he CHOSE to spend them with us, he chose to show us that we are in control of our own lives, that no one is responsible for us. At the end of the day, an anonymous donor stepped up with 100, 000 dollars for The Mission Continues, in HIS honor. There are no adequate words to describe how I felt at that moment, I was proud, and ashamed at the same time, I knew in that moment it was time for major changes, time to step outside my comfort zone, to really and truly live in a way that will inspire others to do the same. Lt Col Mark Weber is my hero.

What I tell myself:
I worked really hard yesterday, so I don't have to work as hard today.
I ate healthy all week, it's the weekend I can eat what I want.
No one else is doing it, so why should I?
Eh, no one will know if I do this half-assed.
I don't have to be all for something to be involved in it.

What I should be telling myself:
Work hard everyday!
The better I take care of myself, the better my life will be.
Be the example, even when it sucks worse than anything you have ever experienced in your life.
Do everything you do with passion, whole heartedly, and never leave anything undone.
Why waste your time doing something you do not whole heartedly believe in?

Really, there is a lot of SHIT in my life,a lot of things I use to justify actions that I would not always be proud of, its time to clean it up.

What things silly, or otherwise do you tell yourself to make yourself feel better? Link Up!

Chicago Bound

And, i'm off! I know you are all wondering what on earth is going on in Chicago. I'll tell you. I have been selected for a Mission Continues Fellowship!! What on earth is that you ask? Well here is some information about the program from themissioncontinues.org.

About the Fellowship

Who is a Mission Continues Fellow?

A Mission Continues Fellow is a post-9/11 veteran who has accepted the challenge to continue their service to our country by serving their community. Read about our current Fellows here.

What is a Mission Continues Fellowship?

Fellowships are 26 weeks in length and require 520 hours of service (an average of 20 hours a week), during which the Fellow works at a nonprofit organization in their community. Fellows work on issues ranging from education to the environment and from disaster preparedness to homelessness. Each fellowship is unique. Fellows are encouraged to choose a fellowship location based on their personal passions.

Why should I become a Mission Continues Fellow?

Every Mission Continues Fellow applies to the program for unique reasons. Some were looking for the sense of purpose that was so present in their military service, but has been missing since they returned home. Others were looking to find a way to apply the skills and leadership acquired in the military to address an issue in their community. Still others saw the program as a stepping stone to begin down a road to achieve future goals. Regardless of the motivation, most Fellows find that their fellowship reminds them of their strengths and skills and helps ensure a successful transition to civilian life. Furthermore, they have found that the Fellowship Program has become a family -- like-minded veterans who are returning home, eager to serve again.
Through the Fellowship Program, we also honor the fallen through service. The Mission Continues is proud to partner withThe Travis Manion Foundation to challenge every Mission Continues Fellow to serve their fellowship in honor of a fallen service member.  Fellows are given the opportunity to choose a fallen service member that they knew personally, or they can opt to be paired with a family identified by The Travis Manion Foundation.  The organizations have been intrinsically linked since Travis Manion and Eric Greitens served together in the Iraq, where Travis was killed in 2007.  When Eric returned, inspired by Travis’ life of service and sacrifice, he was
eager to partner with the Manion Family to honor
the fallen by challenging the living.

What are the benefits of a Mission Continues Fellowship?

Beyond the work Fellows do in their own community, Fellows are connected with other Fellows throughout the country to attend Mission Continues trainings, plan service projects together, speak about their experiences and connect to leadership opportunities. Throughout the Fellowship, The Mission Continues makes every effort to connect Fellows with the right resources to achieve their goals - in the workforce, furthering their education, or in an ongoing role of service. The Mission Continues Fellowship includes a cost-of-living stipend.

In the Fellows' own words:

"Even though we may have been through stressful and traumatic experiences that the general population may never know or understand, we are not that much different. We are still here and want to continue making a difference in or out of the uniform, and veterans are some of the smartest, toughest, most caring, hardest working people the country has to offer.
"The biggest goal I have is to prove this to my country and community. I want to continue my service in the form of the 'Citizen Leader.' I want to continue helping people and taking care of those that are less fortunate."
Casey McCausland, St. Louis, Missouri
"During my fellowship I have completed more than 70 programs and taught over 3000 students in a classroom setting.  I developed and implemented a new interactive exhibit on Invasive Species that saw over 25,000 members of the public during our Open House and Expo events. While the numbers are good, the Fellowship has been so much more than that.  My initial goal was to teach underserved populations.  In my Fellowship I have taught children who are victims of human trafficking, children in shelters waiting for foster care, terminally ill children and kids in group homes...The children I have worked with have changed my life and my view of it."
Melissa Steinman, Phoenix, Arizona
"As a combat wounded veteran from Operation Enduring Freedom, I have been the recipient of much good will and even charity. But this is not what drew me to The Mission Continues. I was, instead, drawn by the opportunity provided by The Mission Continues to give back to my community and to my fellow wounded veterans."
Chris Marvin, Honolulu, Hawaii

Read a research brief on the impact of The Mission Continues Fellowship Program from theCenter for Social Development at Washington University.

Awesome right? I am stoked! I have big ideas for the Jacksonville area, lets hope I can make it all happen! i'll update throughout the weekend as I have time!

Caregiver Retreat!

Not Alone Caregiver Retreat
Retreat spoiler alert: Great news! Opryland Hotel has donated their services and location for our next Not Alone military spouse retreat! We are honored to use their beautiful facilities!

We've had a lot of questions from our community, so we thought we'd take time to address the most frequently asked questions:

1. We would love to give Opryland Hotel the opportunity to support their community, so if you're in TN, AL, GA, or KY, apply! Show them that you are out there and appreciate them!

2. No, this isn't just for active duty! Any female military caregiver, past or present, is allowed to submit.

3. We define a caregiver as someone whose significant other has been injured, physically or mentally, during his military service. He does not have to have been med board processed for his injury.

4. The dates of the retreat are August 31st-September 3rd. The retreat starts on a Friday night and participants will be traveling on Labor Day Monday to return home.

5. Yes, travel expenses are paid for. You will be responsible for your own expense getting to and from the closest airport/ground transportation, and you will be responsible for your own spending money. (That means all boots, hats, belt buckles are on your dime. Lol.)

What this means is you need to get in your submissions ASAP. You have until July 31st to email your bio submission to:

athenascottrublee@gmail.com

Ready. Set. Go!

Leading Lady Bra Review and Military Discount!

For those of you who have been reading a while you already know that I am not always the best at doing things for myself. For those of you who are new here, I am hoping that little fact will remain a dirty little secret, just between us. :) I reached the burnt-out point of no return,  and decided to make some major changes, one of them being putting myself first sometimes. That said,  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, let me say it one more time, LOVE me a good bra! I am a bigger lady, blessed or cursed, depends on the day, with a large upper region as well. Wearing the right bra can mean all the difference in the world for me. It has to be super comfy, but also provide enough support, no scrunching of the  back fat, or trench digging. There is nothing worse than taking off your bra and having indentations in your skin!

I recently had an amazing opportunity to try two bras from Leading Lady. There were sooo many to chose from which is a rarity of it's own when it comes to bigger girl products. I went with the Molded Padded Seamless Underwire in Nude, also available in 8 other color choices

  • Molded seamless style looks great under clothing
  • Lightly padded cups
  • Adjustable straps for comfort
  • Underwire for added breast support
  • Latex free
  • Retail Price $38.00

AND, the Seamless Racer-Back Underwire,  in white, also available in black, and nude. I really wanted to try a wireless, but at a size 38D, I am not that brave, i'm working on my bravery too!

  • Molded padded seamless cups look great under clothing
  • Front closure for ease in dressing
  • Race back styling for comfort and prevents straps from slipping
  • Adjustable straps for a perfect fit
  • Retail Price $30.60

Let me just say that I was very nervous when I got them because they were not my NORMAL size, but I used LeadingLady.com's Find Your Fit Tool, turns out, I have been wearing the wrong size bra for YEARS! OUCH!

Once I tried the bras on I was sold, and they continued to prove their selves throughout the week by providing serious comfort and support through all of my usual activities. I felt more confident knowing I didn't have to adjust all day because I was falling out, or the straps loosened or they were digging into my skin. Back to the doing things for myself part, I WILL be ordering more, probably one of EACH kind, in EVERY color, LOL. I feel like knowing that the basic bras work for me I can be more ambitious and try some more colors, and maybe even wireless, or lace , BUT I am waiting until July 1st because in honor of Independence Day, Leading Lady is offering a Military Family and Friends Discount, 20% off of their already reasonable prices, it doesn't get better than that!
